Latest Adventures At The Living Prairie Museum

We have spent a few days geocaching at the Living Prairie Museum, it is a nice place to walk around to cache in and to visit.  Our Prairie grass lands are all but gone!  This is something that we don't even think about until we visit a place such as this and realize what a shame it is that we have invaded every corner of our earth, the only planet we have to live on.  We appreciate these little wilderness spaces, and it would be nice to have more of them.  Below are some of the pictures of the caches we found and the area we found them in.  We picked up a travelbug at the cache by the rock..The Dalecarlia horse who wants to wants to travel back home to Falun, Dalarna in Sweden.

This is the cache that had eluded us earlier in the week and Mr. GPS was about to say that we were not leaving without finding it, but his geoeyes were peeled and it was a walk up and find for him!  So we were able to carry on in short order, but first we stopped to talk pictures of this fantastic old tree.

Then onwards to the next.  We realized how large this forested area was while going to this next cache!  We came upon some young boys building a fort to play in....we saw a camp where someone spent the night or had a party!

Our next cache took us out of the Living Prairie Museum and across a busy road, in a space by Community Center!   Was a nice little area with some evergreen trees.

We found all of the caches today quite easily, except 1 that was a DNF for us.

We thought this one was a good one, a little birdfeeder hung in a micro park in a residental area.  This was the end of our day, it's now time to walk back to the car...this is the worse part! when there are no caches and we are tired! But we make it and reflect on the day and always think "what a good day" it was.  We do enjoy getting out and discovering areas and parks that we did not know existed.

Monday, we had tryed for this one on our first day caching but muggles kept us from attempting it.  Today was muggle free and quiet so it was a rather quick find for a cache that was not supposed to be winter friendly. 
This next one was in the bush, we had a little bit of bushwacking, we looked for this one for quite awhile, but had no idea what we were looking for as we only had co ordinates, no size no clues! We were about to leave and go onto the next place but K&Ccache spotted it, good geoeyes! perserverance does pay off.

The next one is by the golf course, we are walking downhill towards the cache and I spot it before I even get close to it.  It is an emergency box which is very well sealed and kept everything nice and dry.  We discovered a travel bug named Veronica The Bear.  I decide to take the travel bug with me to Winnipeg.  Veronica has an interesting story which can be found here.  I will move her on in the next few weeks, till I place her she will travel with me.  Veronica is the first travel bug that I have taken, I have discovered quite a few.

To get to this cache we had to drive down a very soft and muddy road, K&Ccache mobile was very dirty when we go out of there!

This was another walk up and grab, we did have a bit of a walk to get to it and out of it.

Our last one, another walk through snow that was hard slugging through.  This was through another little park next to a farm yard.  This was a walk up and spot for Chicksteroo.  The walk back to the geomobile was a long one for me, I was played out!  This was the last one of the day.  This picture is of the park across the road from where we found the cache, looks like a fun park for kids to play in.

Geocaching in St. Albert Alberta

Chicksteroos first find

Sunday, and the sun is shining for us again!  We are heading into St. Albert today for our caching adventures.  Today I am using Kal's GPS and it was so nice to just plug it into the computer and download the co ordinates, wow so easy, I love it! Here again in St Albert we discovered the little neighborhood parks.  These little parks will be so nice to discover in the summertime, they have benches to sit on and enjoy the scenery.  I am always amazed at how many little parks each town has.  What a wonderful way to discover them!  K&Ccache is a great pilot and navigator, getting around to all the spots that we had to get to, with limited help from the map that had a very few street names on it.  Our first destination! We walked along the paved path till we got to the park and the gps was telling us it was in a tree, Chicksteroos geosenses were on high alert and she found it pronto, her very first, and here's the proof!
The temperature was in the low +'s again today with a little bit of breeze

which makes it a bit chilly at times.  Off to our next find through another little park and then around a fence to a spruce tree!  I am not sure who made this find, K&Ccache may have seen it first, but there was a little to do about touching it!  You touch it, no I don't want to!  What if it moves...what if it bites me? I rather it bite you!

Hummmm, do birds nest when there is still snow?  It did look realistic, the bird was faced away from the front of the nest and that made it hard to tell that it was a decoy!  It was certainly a fun cache, we liked this one.  I marked this one as a favorite of mine.  I believe that for every 10 finds you get to pick 1 favorite. 

The next one was through another park with a little bit of bushwacking in some fairly thick undergrowth.  This one was a small ammo box hidden under a stump, it was pretty neat.  There were a few tradeables in it, they were all in good shape and nice and dry.  I did not see any garbage swag in any of the caches that we looked in over the weekend, all neat stuff for the right person.  We took nothing and where we could we left a ladybug fridge magnet and a sig card.  Both girls spotted this one.

 Somewhere in between these caches I found one which was my only one of the day.  It was a micro that was laying on the ground so we signed it and I hung it back up.  We seemed to have missed getting a picture of this one.  Just for the record, I was not skunked!  The next find was a lock and lock container in another little park.  Most of these were quite easy finds.

On to another little park with a little bit of bushwacking for find number 6 which was another small ammo box, the ammo boxes are a real nice container if you are hiding in the bush.  There is lots of room to put tradeables and the box keeps everything really nice and dry.  For the most part they can be quite easy to find because of the size so you have to make getting to it a bit of a challenge.  Although they can be hidden well in the right spot, like the one hidden in the stump, if it were not for the clue it would have been hard to find.

There was a rabbit at the end of this path but it ducked behind the snow bank just as I took the picture.  These are the paths that the towns have from the street to the parks.  One park may have a few paths to it, great planning on the citys part.

Saturday in the Assiniboine Forest

Another Sunny Day Of Enjoying The Forest

One more day of caching in the forest and the PartnerS were looking forward to it!  The sunshine was beautiful, with a light wind blowing.  The temperature at 11:00 A.M. was -8 with a windchill of -16c, was a little chilly out in the open, but in the forest it was comfortable.  We started our day hiking on the trails, the sun was shining and the sky was blue.  This picture was hiking across a clearing to start our adventure.

The GPS was cooperating today and so we didn't have too many problems finding any the caches that we were after.  We found our first one rather easily.  It was a nice cache hanging in a tree, it was very winter friendly, but not so well hidden in the winter time!  In the summer time it would be a more difficult find with the leaves on the trees to hide it a little.  But easy on the first one of the day is always a good thing!

We continued along the trail, taking in the scenery and enjoying the fantastic day!  For January 28 can you beat these temps and the very minimal amount of snow cover that we have on the ground?  If we had our normal snowfall we sure would not be bushwhacking in Assiniboine Forest right now.  We are so lucky to be able to be finding these caches at this time of the year, in the summer time this area would be infested with bugs and wet terrain.

makes us wonder, who hauled this into the forest to hang in a tree?  So we shake our heads and carry on. 




MaaaWaaaaaahhhh!

 To this next little micro, that Gerry's eagle eye spied!  As you can see he is more then happy to add it to his list of "finds".  In this cache there was a picture of two people who wanted to travel around, so we took them with us down the trail to drop into another cache.
 

Down this trail and up that trail with some bushwhacking in between the 3 brave GeoPartnerS trudged on to the next one!  This one was kind of hard to see, it was above eye level and looking up into the sun made it hard to see.  We thought this was a real good "in plain site" hide.  But Diane's Sharpe eyes spotted it!  Miss Di can claim this find and she was more then happy to put into her "Yeehaw I found it" folder!

Who wouldn't love going for a walk down this wonderful trail?  We are off to the next one, it will be the 4th of the day.  We met up with a fair amount of dogs and their masters today out getting their exercise and fresh air.  The dogs really enjoy being out there running free.  Except 2 older dogs, who were not enjoying their long walk too much.  They were walking rather slow and resting a lot.  We can attest to the fact that as we age it gets harder!  So around the corner, up a hill and there we are approaching our next target.

In the woodpile!  We found this one quite easy, cute little container that looked like a flying saucer.  It was called Tinder Circle, how appropriate.  The container did not close too well as some of the tabs were broke off the round lock and lock container.  We did manage to close it better then we found it.  We left the picture that we picked up in a previous cache in this cache.  We figured this to be a good temporary home for the couple.

We came across this prime piece of real estate on our way to our next big find.  We liked the high ceiling in the spacious A frame and so we sat in it awhile and tryed it out for comfort, to see if it was to our liking, but we decided that it was a little too drafty and so we made a unanimous decision to forgo making an offer on the niffty little property. 

Our next two finds were ammo boxes which are so nice as there is alot of room for tradeables and for the log book.  The ammo cans also close up real well and keep everything inside dry and safe. 

The second ammo box called "Periodically Insane" was our first little milestone...our #50th  find...yeahhh.

This next one was a very good hide, we named it as a favorite.  The spot that it was hidden in was so very well camouflaged into its environment.  Diane spotted it, good eye for sure!  This cache is number 7  in a series of caches called "The Remember" series.  This series of caches is dedicated to a few of the thousands of Canadian Servicemen who gave everything to defend our way of life.  We need to gather the information in all of the caches and put information together and that will enable us to find the last cache in this series.

We put the container back into its hiding spot and noticed 2 cachers approching us so we stayed and met them and chatted a bit.  The cachers were Rookies7691 a dad and his son, also new to this game.

Up and onward to our next and last geocache of the day.  This was another find by Sis Di!

Then it's time to head back to the car, we have about a 1 km hike, again 3 tired geocachers head back with backsides kind of dragging! 

We decided to pick up a piece of wood to house one of the caches that we plan to construct when we decide to start to hide some of our own. This was the weather when we left and when we left the forest.

Caching In Calgary Alberta

Our first one of the day  was an easy
walk up and grab.
"This is easy" she says!

I spent Christmas in Calgary this year with family.   My sister is also a new geocacher and so we decided to take advantage of a little time on boxing day and pick up a few caches.  The sky was blue as could be, the sun was bright, it was an all around beautiful day.  The temperature was in the +'s.  When we started out mid morning all was quiet, not too much traffic and no muggles around, so caching was easy!  But getting around 11 A.M. people were starting to move around.  We cached until 1 P.M. and decided to call it a day!  We ended up nabbing 4, so a successful and fun day for us.  The weather was very mild for the whole week that I was in Calgary, which makes for a very pleasant holiday.  Thank you for the caches Calgary! I will be back!
